Friends of Nillumbik asked Council:

Friends of Nillumbik has been informed that the State Government will not be implementing all of the recommendations of the Victorian Bushfires Royal Commission. This is of great concern to us considering the terrible loss of life and property suffered by Nillumbik in February 2009 and we ask if Nillumbik Shire Council will strongly lobby the Victorian Government to faithfully implement all of the recommendations which is what the Premier pledged to do during his election campaign?

Cr Helen Coleman, Mayor, responded:

Council has had no indication from the State Government that it will not be implementing the recommendations of the Victorian Bushfires Royal Commission.

In May 2011 the State Government tabled in Parliament its plan to implement all 67 recommendations of the Victoria Bushfire Royal Commission. Mr Neil Comrie has been appointed to monitor, assess and report on the progress of the implementation efforts. Mr Comrie published a progress report in July 2011 and will deliver his final report by 31 July 2012. Council has provided copies of plans and further information to Mr Comrie to assist him with his work.
